The short answer

An AI marketing agency is a service business that runs some or all of your marketing using AI tools rather than a room full of junior staff. The term covers three genuinely different offers: a traditional agency that has added AI to its existing process, an AI-first agency built around automated production, and AI marketing software that does the execution with no agency attached. Published 2026 pricing guides put agency retainers in the $3,000 to $15,000 a month range for mid-market work, with small business engagements from around $500 to $2,000 and enterprise programs well past $50,000. Software sits one or two orders of magnitude below that because you supply the judgment. The question worth answering first is not which agency, it is which of the three you actually need.

Three different things get sold as an AI marketing agency

Search the term and the results look interchangeable. They are not. The three models differ in who does the thinking, who does the producing, and what happens to the price when your volume goes up. Read the table by the last column, because that is the one that determines whether the retainer is worth it.

Model What you are really buying Reported US cost What happens when volume doubles
Traditional agency using AI The same strategy, account management and reporting you always bought, produced faster internally. AI shows up in their workflow, not on your invoice line items. Usually unchanged from their standard retainer, commonly quoted at $3,000 to $15,000 a month. The retainer goes up, because the constraint is still account team hours.
AI-first agency A production line built around generation: content, ad variations, landing pages and reporting at volume, with a small human team steering it. Often positioned below traditional retainers, frequently in the $2,000 to $8,000 a month band. Less than proportionally, which is the real argument for this model.
AI marketing software (an agent) The execution layer only. It plans, writes, launches and adjusts. There is no account manager and no strategy call. Tens to a few hundred dollars a month. AiMarketer is in early access, see the pricing page. Barely moves. Volume is the thing software is actually good at.
In-house hire plus AI tools One marketer who owns the outcome, with tools doing the production they would otherwise outsource. A US marketing manager salary plus roughly $100 to $600 a month of tooling. You hire again, or the person becomes the bottleneck.

The cost figures above are the ranges that appear consistently across published 2026 agency pricing guides, not prices we can verify on a rate card. Agencies almost never publish rates, which is itself worth noting when you are comparing them against software that does. Treat them as a planning band and ask any agency for their actual number in writing before you budget against it.

What AI marketing services cost by company size

Retainer quotes track company size far more closely than they track the amount of AI involved. That is the tell: you are buying account team attention, and attention is priced by how demanding your account is.

Company stage Reported monthly retainer What that usually covers Honest read
Solo founder or local business $500 to $2,000 Social posting, a monthly content batch, light ad management. This is the band where software plus a few hours of your own time genuinely competes.
Small business, one or two channels $2,000 to $10,000 Paid media management, content production, basic reporting. Worth it if the agency owns a channel you cannot staff. Wasteful if it mostly ships posts.
Mid-market, multi-channel $5,000 to $25,000 Strategy, paid across several platforms, content, lifecycle email, analytics. The band where a real account team earns its money, assuming you have someone internal to brief it.
Enterprise $50,000 and up Multi-brand or multi-region programs, compliance review, dedicated pods. Priced on coordination and risk, not on production. AI barely moves this number.

One line that is easy to miss: almost none of these numbers include ad spend. If an agency quotes $6,000 a month and manages $20,000 of media, your real marketing cost is $26,000. Some agencies instead take a percentage of spend, commonly 10 to 20 percent, which quietly means their income rises when your budget rises whether or not the return does. We priced that trade in detail on AI marketing pricing.

What an AI marketing agency actually does day to day

Stripped of the positioning, the work is the same six jobs every marketing agency has always done. What changed is which of them a machine now does faster than a junior.

Audience and offer research

Reading your data and the market to decide who to talk to and what to say. AI accelerates the gathering. Deciding what the finding means is still a person.

Content production at volume

Blog posts, emails, social, landing copy. This is the job AI genuinely industrialized, and the one most agency retainers were quietly priced around.

Paid media management

Building campaigns, writing variations, watching spend. Google and Meta already automate the auction layer for free, so the value is in structure and judgment.

Lifecycle and email

Welcome flows, abandoned cart, win-back, newsletters. Highly automatable once the strategy exists. See our take on ai email marketing for how far that goes.

Reporting and analysis

Turning platform data into a decision. AI writes the summary in seconds. Deciding to kill a channel is a conversation.

Strategy and accountability

What to bet on, what to stop, and who answers for the number at the end of the quarter. Nothing has automated this, and be skeptical of anyone selling it as though something has.

Count how many of those six your current agency really does. Most retainers we hear described cover two and three, sometimes five. If that is the shape of yours, you are buying production, and production is the part that got cheap.

How to choose an AI marketing agency without overpaying

1. Ask what percentage of deliverables is AI produced

Not to catch them out. AI production is fine and often better. You are asking so you can judge whether the retainer is priced against human hours that no longer happen.

2. Ask who owns the accounts and the data

Your Google Ads account, your Meta business manager, your list, your analytics. If any of those live inside the agency, leaving costs you the asset, and that is leverage you handed over for free.

3. Ask for the actual number in writing

Including setup, onboarding, minimum term, and what happens to the fee if ad spend changes. Percentage-of-spend deals need a floor and a ceiling.

4. Ask what happens in month four

Months one to three are onboarding and easy wins. Ask specifically what the work looks like once the obvious fixes are done, because that is what you are actually paying for long term.

5. Separate strategy from execution in the quote

If they will not split it, you cannot tell what you are buying. Once it is split, you can often keep the strategy and move the execution to software.

6. Check whether you have anyone to brief them

An agency with no internal counterpart drifts. This is the single most common reason a competent agency underdelivers, and it is not their fault.

Who each option actually fits

Hire a full agency

You spend more than roughly $10,000 a month on media, operate in a regulated category, or run several brands. Coordination and accountability are worth real money at that size.

Hire an AI-first agency

You need a lot of output across many channels, your offer is settled, and your main constraint is production capacity rather than strategy.

Use AI marketing software

You know what you sell and to whom, and nothing is getting executed because nobody has the hours. This is the most common situation we see and the one we built for.

Hybrid: software plus a specialist

Software does the daily production, and you buy five to ten hours a month of a senior human for direction. Frequently the best value in the $1,000 to $3,000 range.

Keep it in house

Marketing is a core competitive advantage for you, or your product is complex enough that outside writers will never get it right without heavy editing.

Do nothing yet

Your product has not found its market. No agency and no software fixes that, and both will burn money proving it to you slowly.

Where we are honest about the limits

AiMarketer is not an agency. Nobody here joins your Monday call, and there is no account manager to escalate to. If what you need is a person who owns the number and can be held to it, hire an agency or hire in house, and we would tell you that on a call rather than sell you a subscription that will disappoint you.

We are also in early access, so the fair comparison is not against a twenty year old agency with a client list. What we replace is the execution half of a retainer: planning the campaign, writing the ads and emails, launching them to your own connected accounts once you approve, and moving budget toward what converts. That is the part of the invoice that used to be junior hours.

And the thing no agency or tool fixes: if the offer is wrong, more marketing makes the answer arrive faster and more expensively. It does not change the answer.

Questions people ask about AI marketing agencies

What is an AI marketing agency?

An AI marketing agency is a service business that runs your marketing using AI tools instead of a large junior team. In practice the label covers three different offers: a traditional agency that has added AI to its existing process, an AI-first agency built around automated production at volume, and AI marketing software that does the execution with no agency wrapped around it. They charge very different money, so the label alone tells you almost nothing.

What does an AI marketing agency do?

The same six jobs any marketing agency does: audience and offer research, content production, paid media management, lifecycle and email, reporting, and strategy. AI has genuinely industrialized the middle four, especially content and ad variations. It has not automated deciding what to bet on or being accountable for the result. If a retainer mostly covers production, that is the half that got cheap.

How much does an AI marketing agency cost?

Published 2026 pricing guides consistently report $3,000 to $15,000 a month for mid-market retainers, roughly $500 to $2,000 for small business engagements, $5,000 to $25,000 for multi-channel mid-market programs, and $50,000 and up at enterprise. Agencies rarely publish rate cards, so treat these as planning bands. Almost none of them include your ad spend, which is usually the larger number.

Are AI marketing agencies worth it?

They are worth it when you are buying strategy, coordination and accountability, which typically means media budgets above roughly $10,000 a month, a regulated category, or several brands to keep straight. They are poor value when the retainer mostly buys content volume and ad variations, because that work is now cheap to produce and you are paying legacy prices for it.

Can AI replace a marketing agency?

It can replace the execution half and not the judgment half. AI can plan campaigns, write the copy, build the variations, launch them and shift budget. It cannot decide what a customer is worth to you, notice that your offer stopped being competitive, or own the quarterly number. Small businesses spending under about $3,000 a month usually can replace most of an agency. Above that, a hybrid of software plus a senior human tends to win.

How do I choose an AI marketing agency?

Ask four things before price. What percentage of deliverables is AI produced, so you can judge whether the retainer is priced against hours that no longer happen. Who owns the ad accounts, the list and the analytics, because assets held by the agency are leverage you gave away. What the work looks like in month four, once the easy wins are gone. And ask them to split strategy from execution in the quote, because once it is split you can often keep one and automate the other.

Is AI marketing legit?

The underlying technology is, and the ad platforms themselves run on it: Google Smart Bidding and Meta Advantage+ are AI and they are free and already switched on in your account. What deserves scepticism is pricing. Some agencies use AI to cut their production cost without cutting the retainer, which is a margin decision dressed as an innovation. Ask what changed on your invoice, not what changed in their workflow.

Costing the two options side by side is the next step, and AI marketing agency vs software runs the numbers with a worked example. If the agency you are pricing is a HubSpot partner, HubSpot agency pricing explains what the partner program costs them and where the onboarding waiver is worth more than any discount. For the paid side specifically, AI advertising breaks the ad stack into four layers and prices each one, and Google Ads management cost covers the percentage-of-spend model in detail. Smaller operation, start with AI marketing tools for small business.
